Using Texas Hold'em as an example, 689slop will walk you through how to play Poker step by step.
Posting the Blinds
The player to the left of the Dealer posts the Small Blind, and the player next to them posts the Big Blind before the hand begins.
Dealing the Hole Cards
Each player receives 2 face-down cards that only they can see. These are your secret cards — no one else can look at them.
Flop / Turn / River
There are 5 Community Cards in total. 3 are revealed on the Flop, 1 on the Turn, and the last 1 on the River. Players make their betting decisions at each stage.
Showdown
After the River, players who have not folded show their cards, and the player with the best hand takes the pot.
Winning Core Strategies
Luck does play a role in Poker, but experienced players agree that a solid strategy raises your long-term chances of making a profit.
- Use your position — Acting last near the Dealer Button gives you more information before you decide.
- Be selective with your starting hand — Only play strong hands like Ace-King or Pocket Pairs, and be willing to fold weak hands.
- Understand Pot Odds — Weigh the size of the pot against what it will cost you to keep playing before you act.
- Bluff with a purpose — A random bluff with no plan behind it can cost you money.
- Manage your bankroll — Only sit at tables that fit your budget, and never put in a large amount all at once.
- Watch your opponents — Pay attention to how others play, and you'll be able to read their decisions more accurately.
